1992 cutlass ciera sensor or ecm problems Sign In

I have a 1992 cutlass ciera, 3.3, 4spd with 160,00mi on it. the first symptoms were ck engine light, very low idle and speedometer went to zero. it would happen periodically maybe 10% of my driving time. We took it and read the codes, 14, 42, 46. the suggestion because of the unusual symptoms was to change the ecm. Which I did but used the old prom. the symptoms cleared up for about two days then started again but got more frequent, now they are constant, and the cooling fan comes on at starting. we changed the speed sensor, temp sensor, checked all the plugs and wiring for damage or loosness. Also checked the ground. i am retired and this is my only vehicle and the dealership told me i could not afford to fix it. Oh and now it won't even show the codes, my suspect is the prom but it is very expensive.

Some problems can be harder to find than other problems, especially if it's electrical. Some folks really don't want to pay the rate to have a vehicle diagnosed.
I guess they look at it as having no value because "nothing was really done". My car runs bad, they charged me $100 and it still runs bad, I already knew I had a problem.

But thats the key. What is causing the problem. With drivability problems today that can be 80 to 90% of the job......Finding out whats causing the problem. If you have a shorted or grounded wire in a harness somewhere, you can go thru & change out every sensor, solenoid & module on that car at double to triple the worth of the car and STILL have the same problem.

You know I wish this was a common failure pattern for me and I could tell you to go change the wishbone actuator and all would be good. Just going off what you posted, it sounds like you have an intermittent short or bad ground but I don't know for sure, I can't see or drive the car. It doesn't sound like you have the right tools to track this down so the about the only advise I can give you is to look around, talk to some friends, check the ase.com & iatn.net shop locator links and see what independent shop they use that is good at electrical problems and take it in to get checked out. They won't be the cheapest shop but will probably be your cheapest option in the long run. With this problem, don't look for the cheapest shop, try to find the best shop.....

2 of the comments I had a bit of a problem with was, someone recommending a PCM based of the 3 codes, that is a heck of leap from just coolant temp, EST & P/S codes. Also the dealer saying your car isn't worth fixing due to this problem when they don't even know what the problem is. If the only problem is a corroded PCM ground, I don't think a $20 repair would be enough to scrape a car......

Don't all mechanics use crystal balls?

Glad to hear you got it going......Are you saying you used the prom that came with the PCM or changed you prom to the new PCM?

I used the ecm as it came from the junkyard with the prom in it. I pulled the new ecm and old prom out completely. Since I had the same symptoms with the new ecm and old prom, and this time I also changed the prom I assumed it was the prom. Could change it to see what happens but I am so relieved I do not want to experiment.
