Hey all,

I put smaller wheels and tires on my Grand Am today. It was a mix up at tirerack that I didn't feel like waiting to fix. Original equipment on the car was 15 inch rims-I'm now running 14 inch rims. I can get the tire sizes to you if needed. My question then is this-how do I recalibrate the speedometer and odometer so I'm not jacking up my miles unnecessarily? I've read info on changing out the gears or something but I'm not sure how it works on the Grand Am and I'm not sure how to calculate it correctly.

The good news is my front end steering wobble is gone-I think one of my original equipment wheels was bent pretty badly to be wobbling as bad as it was.

Anyway, get back to me when you can and thanks all!

-Nate

I think the easies thing to do would be replacing the tires with ones that have the same outside diameter as the originals. Keep the 14" rims just put bigger tires on
For example a P194/70R14 has an OD of 24.8” where a P205/60R15 has a 24.7” OD that .1” difference you’ll never see on the speedo.
One other thing to consider is that the computers for engine management and anti-lock brakes have been programmed from the factory and rely on the OD of the tire size being kept original.
For the ABS; it may put itself into a false ABS event because it knows that the larger (original) wheels/tires cannot slow down that fast without locking up.

Well crap...what if that isn't an option? The tires I have are already on and I don't think I can send them back to tirerack at this point. Their tire lookup system failed me. Original equipment for my vehicle is different from what they said it was.

Here is the current smaller size tire: 185-75-14 (Tirerack said this was the correct size-shame on me for not double checking it myself, I know)

And the original equipment size is: 195-65-15

I went out and bought 4 14 inch steel rims from a junkyard and took them off myself and yeah, I had to really run around to get this done...

So, am I unsafe doing this? Will I hurt the car? And is there a way to recalibrate for the smaller size or is it more trouble than it's worth? They have a 85,000 mile warranty on them so I was hoping to be done with tires for some time...

Thanks,
Nate

Wait a second...if I did this correctly the old tires had an outside diameter of 24.98 and the new tires have an outside diameter of 24.96...so I should be just fine then, right? Anyone feel like checking my math?

No your math looks good to me and my GoodYear catalog; they say that both these tire have a 25’ OD.
So if your speedo is out it sure isn’t the fault of the tires.
