1992 Accord repetitive knocking sound.

My 1992 Accord LX 2.2L is making some knocking or dull clinking sounds when accelerating through 1st 2nd and the first part of 3rd. This may be completely unrelated but I think the sound is worse when its cold out. The knocking isn't present in lower rpms. I'm not quite sure what rpm it starts around but i'd guess around 2000-2300. 4th and 5th gear don't experience any of these problems and the higher rpms of third aren't affected. I'm not that great with cars but if I had to guess just from the sound i'd say it might be the axel because it sounds like something is rotating and hitting something else with each rotation. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And could you please not get too complicated in you're explanations and solutions cause I'm not going to go in there and change some bearings or anything myself. Thanks
