1991 nissan wont start Sign In

Hey guys I have a 1991 Nissan 300zx that i can't get to start. When i turn the key nothing happens, no noises. The battery is new, so it isn't that. I also took out the starter and it tested fine, so its not that either. It was working fine until about a month ago, then it just stopped working. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

New doesn't mean charged up - is it? When you say nothing do you mean no electrical anything works at all?

Usually when no sound is heard it would be a cable connection problem, neutral safety switch or clutch switch in standards and possibly a problem with ign switch.

Have you tried a jump start?

There is definitely power in the battery and jumping didn't help.

Then see if power goes to the starter solonoid when key is turned to "crank" and go from there,

I measured 12v at the solenoid without having to turn the key. What does this mean?

You are on the wrong wire. There should be another smaller wire that will only have power when the key is in the start or crank position. The other wire will have power all the time.

I just ran the ECU diagnostic and it said it is the detonation sensor circuit. What does this mean?

The 'detonation' sensor (knock sensor) has nothing to do with the problem you are having, but you should have that looked at after this starting issue is taken care of. As Jeff mentioned, the small wire (as shown in the pic) should have 12V to it during crank.

This is the knock sensor. The knock sensor's piezoelectric element detects engine detonation. It sends a voltage signal to the ECU. It is located on the top of the engine block under the intake. This is likely a secondary problem. Usually won't keep the car from starting or running if it fails. Here is a picture.

Also here is the diagnostic procedure in case you want to check it. Not sure if you can get to the plug without removing the intake. See other images.

So if there isn't 12v at the wire during its crank what does that mean? because i took the starter to an auto store and when they tested it, it worked fine.

After looking at the wiring diagram it could be bad wire, ignition switch, starter relay, anti theft relay, clutch interlock switch and so on. Pretty much what Tom said in the first post. But one step at a time. Check the wire first.
