1991 maxima wont start

1991 Nissan Maxima 200,000 miles. Car would crank and try to start but sputtered dead in less than a second. The starter was engaging but the car would not fire.

Hodge; There are a kazillion causes of your symptom. We need to know if it's getting spark and/or fuel.
Nissans have problems with the coolant temp sensors (CTS). Check the connector at the sensor for a good, positive connnection and check it for corrosion, clean if needed. This could cause it to overfuel and 'flood' the engine. Timing belt, injector issues, fuel pump, ignition issues, ect. are all suspect at this point.

I have now checked and the engine is not flooded or seized. The battery registers as good and the starter also. In chkecking the voltage at the starter with the car off there are 26.6volts this decreases to 4.6 when the engine is cranking. At the connection that runs the negative ground from the starter up to the relay and then to the positive cable I found 26.6 with car off and 26.6 when cranking I am not sure what this signifies if you could help me I was Also checking on A/C.

Also the car will now not crank at all. So i am attempting to diagnose that problem first.

26.6V? Whoa! We working on an airplane? A fully charged 12V battery has 13.2V (1.2V per cell). Regardless, if the voltage drops to 4V during crank, I'd say you've got a bum battery.

it is 12.45 volts on the dc current. I wass checking on AC for some reason. I tried a different battery and it still will not try to crank. i tried to short the strater between the two post and it still will not crank. It seems to me it has a draw on the electricity when I try to crank. Any ideas on most likely causes for a draw. Also the starter directly goes from 12.45 to about 4 volts on cranking. The first resistor clip up from the starter has no change from the 12.45 volts does this mean it is bad?

Don't even want to think this, but have you tried to turn the engine over by hand? It can be a bit of a pain to do, but there is a large bolt head on the crankshaft. With the key off, put a wrench or ratchet/socket, and try and turn the engine. If you can't turn it...well, you know the answer. If it turns, you're probably looking at a bad starter.
