Hello everyone newbe here on forum, but old shadetree mechanic. we have a 1991 buick century that mother in law just bought car is in good shape but had a broken brake line going to back drivers side wheel but the guy replaced the line before she got it. But told her it needed bleeding so she called me. ok the car is 3.3 auto ps pb air all the goodies. here is the problem the brakes start to slow down the car with about one inch of travel but are spongy for about two more inches and never really get hard I bleed the brakes starting with back right then back left , front right front left. engine off did this at least three times about a quart of fluid worth. Still no change so I started the car and tried the brakes and noticed that as I push the engine idle changes not a lot but very noticeable. So I tried to bleed with the engine running and when I crack the bleeder open the fluid comes out like before but when it stops the engine reves real high maybe 1500 rpms untill you release the brake pedal.
Any ideas will be appreciated

Just a guess....vacuum leak in the power booster....maybe?

Bleed with the engine off.
Apply the brakes several times first to bleed the vacuum .
Bleed in this sequence..
right rear
left front
left rear
right front
Rear drum brakes? or rear disc? if drum,make sure shoes are not worn and properly adjusted.
Front pads ok? not worn?
I recently had a similar car ,blew a line to the rear,naturally,they were all rusted going back there and required replacement.
Bled several times and couldn't get proper pressure to rears.
Had to replace the master cylinder.(put new one on)IMO only way to go if available...
Bench bled master first,(necessary) and then installed,instantly when bleeding pressure was much better and system bled right.

Thanks dave and jim for the quick replies I will try and apply some vacumm to the booster and check for leakdown. and the back brakes are drums (sorry forgot to mention that) pulled drums off shoes looked good and tight did not check disc pads yet. Also thought about master cyl. also but wanted to get other ideas before replacing anything for her.But I will check that out.
