I have a 1991 Pontiac Firebird with the 3.1 v6 engine. The oil pressure gauge reads fine when I start the car, but when I break it goes down to 0, and when I accelerate it goes back up just past red. Ive put it in park when the oil pressure reads 0 and watched the engine temps and the engine stays around 160 degrees so I am not sure if it is the oil pump or a faulty oil pressure switch. I am a little worried because this car has to make a 300 mile trip tomorrow and I don't want it to overheat during the trip. Any help would be appreciated. -Wujman

Also the I checked the oil and the previous owner filled the oil up way too much! Could that also be a reason that the oil pressure can't stay up?

Oil pressure switch is a low-cost item and usually the first step when facing a possible oil pressure situation.

The switch would be located near the oil filter or on the oil pan somewhere right? I don't really have a means to jack the car up easily to just look at it.

The oil pressure sending unit is near the oil filter.

Alright, I will replace that and see if the oil pressure gauge reads correctly.
