1991 Gmc fuel gauge

 I have a 1991 Jimmy the small one with 4.3 V6 5 speed standard . It has a digital dash and all of a sudden the fuel gauge has stoped working. Does anyone no how to diagnose the problem and is the fuel sending unit in the tank and is it part of the fuel pump assembley? Thank You for any help you can give me Huffy47

You can test the tank sender by backprobing the purple wire at the harness and jumping it to ground. Now turn the key on momentarily and if the gauge jumps to full, then the problem is the tank unit. If not, the problem is in the rest of the circuit, possibly the dash unit.
You will have to check with the dealer to determine if the gauge assembly is sold separately from the pump or not.
