Low on coolant or water now would cause erratic cooling no matter what the cause. Loss of it unseen can happen sometimes only while driving so you may not easily find evidence or it wasn't properly purged of air to begin with the work that was done. The other is that the head gasket took a hit or allowing coolant to burn thru usually excessive while smoky exhaust would be noted but if slow enough maybe not that much. I'd pressure test cooling system and test for head gasket along with knowing radiator is good, fan for it is good and works on time and do get a safe level of antifreeze in this - not too much, just 50/50 mix to protect to -34F is an industry norm, T

Just hit plain "reply" as we can scroll back to see what has been said here. The reason I mention radiator and fannage is the thing is overheating or fluctuating and may be blowing off coolant to the ground without leaving evidence. Spark plug exam is a good way to tell if ONE or more is different than the others you could test out the different one but they were all the same so that's good news so far. You can't know if cooling system is bone dry so easy as some would still be low in engine in all but the worst overheats. If you can get two gallons in the engine that's a LOT! Heater blasting and working with warm/hot air is a good clue it's not too low. Purging air out takes a few cycles or warmups till thermostat opens and allow cooldowns and repeat. Some vehicle are a real pest to do this and will appear full and are no where near from filling just cold. You stated water pump had a crack in it back at the top. What we don't know yet is was that the cause or a result?? Once overheating for any reason it becomes open book for possible problems. * Known Full of coolant * Fan should kick on for radiator * If touches (coolant wise) two or more rechecks and fills at radiator needed once cooled down again. Note: Temp should not fluctuate or there's a problem - simple as coolant too low or unknown so far without checking more, T
