Below is an account of a problem I had with my van and the solution:

My 1990 E350 developed a problem where it would run for about 15 minuets and then die out. This didn’t seem to happen at cruising speeds of 40mph or more. It seemed to be mainly when the van was at idle. We immediately figured it was a fuel problem and replaced the fuel filters and high pressure fuel pump… this did not fix the problem. We tested the in-tank fuel pumps and they were fine so we began to look at regulators, sensors, EGR, coils, and so on. We replaced or tested all of the afore mentioned with no positive results. I got online and this seemed to be a common problem with no real answers. I figured once everyone fixed the problem then they forgot to update so I wanted to take the time to address it.

Symptoms were:
  1. Started fine and would idle for about 15 to 20 minuets and then all the sudden die like it lost fuel.
  2. Once it died out, it would sometimes start back up if you pumped it vigoriously
  3. If you did manage to get it restarted immediately, you had to keep pumping and sometimes the engine would catch up only to die out again
  4. If you let the van sit for 20 minuets or so then it would start right up and again die out in 15 to 20 minuets.

The problem was the Dual Tank reservoir. The reservoir is located between the tank and the high pressure fuel pump. We did not immediately check this part because it has no electronics going to it. There was no plugs or any “mechanical workings” it seemed, but on closer inspection the part works like a diaphragm in a small engine, and fixed our problem for good.

The part was a dealer only part and cost $200, but we found one at a salvage yard for $25.

I hope this helps you isolate the problem a lot faster that ours. This thing was a nightmare. Feel free to email if you have questions and maybe I can help walk you through the process, although it is pretty simple.
