So long story short - 89 Nissan Stanza 2.0L v4 - has run like a champ for 4yrs. Have never driven it more than 60 miles in a day, and that's rare. Usually only 10-15 per day. Just got an oil change/fluid check etc last week. Took it on it's first long drive over 100mi to the airport. On the way home the next day, there started to be a weird knocking/vibration, but it only happens when I am letting off the gas. If I'm at idle, or giving it gas, no problem. So if I'm cruising along at 55, and I start to let off the gas, there's a knocking. It doesn't sound like metal on metal, but it does affect the steering in that the wheel will jiggle back and forth slightly. It's not a consistent problem. Yesterday I woke up and came to work and it never happened once. Today it happened every time I let off the gas. Again, only when decelerating/letting off the gas, and it's not rhythmic with the car slowing down (ie gets slower as it slows down).. It'll knock, stop.. knock knock, stop.. I know I'm shooting in the dark here - even any vague ideas at what to look at would help. It's probably going into a shop in the next week or two if I can't figure it out, and since I can't reliably create it, I'll probably have to show up there a few times before I can make it occur. TIA Eric

If your feeling it in the steering wheel, the first thing I would try is to remove the power steering belt and see if the noise disappears. If it doesn't, then I would look for a place where the exhaust may be contacting the rack and pinion. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

HT has some good suggestions you should check. Also if the knock isn't happening in relation to the engine or vehicle speed then I would also be looking at the motor mounts and checking the exhaust from broken hangers........
