my 1988 ford f150 i have to hold key and give gas for more than 30 seconds before it will finally start. Once started i have to give a little gas for first minute then truck runs fine after this. i replaced plugs and wires a month ago and fuel filter is only 3-4 months old. a friend suggested to me it could be the timing. I tend to think it is fuel related but the valve on the fuel rail has gas in it so i think gas is getting through ok. any advice.

You shouldn't need to touch the "gas" pedal? Can you hear the fuel pump pressure up (buzz) and stop when key is in run position w/o cranking?

? Have you tried priming it to see if it will start right away? If not try that and move on to fuel pressure check, not common to me but a cold sensor or "Coolan Temp Sensor" could be sending the message that it's not cold if this only happens when cold. Does it restart if not totally cold?

Engine?

Miles?

History if known....

Is the check engine light coming on at all?
