1988 Camry with shimmy in only one wheel Sign In

1988
Toyota
Camry
2.0 Four Cylinder
102,000 miles

Hey guys, I have noticed over the last month or two a pretty bad shimmy in my front driver's side wheel. There is a persistent knocking sound that gets louder and faster as I go faster. It kept getting progressively worse until one day it all of a sudden got really loud and bumpy. Seconds later the tire blew. I figured that it was either the tire of the alignment.

I replaced the tires and got an alignment done, but even then the sound and bumpiness continues. I thought that it might be an issue with the struts, but after some research, I found that that would be more of a verticle thing. This is definitely a cyclical issue. Any thoughts on what it could be and how much it would cost to fix/would I be able to do it on my own. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Well you definately want to get it checked out... With the little info I would probably be looking at the struts & mounts, also checking out the bushings.....

I'm not sure what you mean by "vertical".

Sorry. I meant that I don't think that the issue is that the wheel is "bouncing" . I think that there is something that is wrong with the way that the wheel spins, therefore cyclical, and that that is what is causing the problem.

If you are getting a knocking noise then I expect tha you have a badly worn inner tie rod end. You can jck up the wheel and grab the tire and wiggle it back and forth to see that play.

You could have a bent wheel of bad tire on that side that would have accelerated the tie rod wear and led to this problem and noise your seeing now.
