Ok so I have this 1987 acura intergra 1.6L FI 4cyl...... It was running just fine then would not start one afternoon so I pop started it to get home....... I checked the battery the ignition switch and the wires my grandpa said it was the starter because it would crank but not start so I took the starter out got a new one and put it in when I try to start it there is a loud whinning sound and the RPM gage shoots to red line but it wont crank just a whinning noise I have no idea what to do now

You’re car uses a timing belt and not a timing chain. Furthermore it’s an interference engine. The fact that it’s crankin in the first place is a really good sign. It means that the timing belt hasn’t broken and critical internal engine parts have not crashed into each other. Otherwise you would be the proud owner of a very large paper weight.Wink Before we can advance you to the next level you gotta answer all the questions below.

Is fuel reaching all the plugs? Post the answer to this question by posting the results of a fuel pressure test using a fuel pressure tester.

Is spark reaching all the plugs? Post the answer to this question by posting the results of an inline spark tester check.

Is adequate and proper compression present at all cylinders? Post the answer to this question by posting the results of a compression or cylinder leak down test.

Could an excessive back pressure issue be present? Could the cat have failed and now is it completely blockin the exhaust and creatin too much back pressure? Post the answer to this question by posting the results of an exhaust back pressure test or engine vacuum test.

Are all the injectors firin? Post the answer to this question by usin a noid light and postin the results.

Why was the starter changed?
Was it checked and confirmed to be defective?
Are there any computer error codes.
Have you made sure there aren't any blown fuses, circuit breakers or fusible links?
Have you confirmed a circuit (power and ground) to the ECM?

All the above mentioned tools necessary for doin all the tests I mentioned can be gotten for free at Auto Zone by takin advantage of their free tool loaner service. If you haven’t got an Auto Zone near you then you should check with other auto parts stores. Many auto parts stores offer a free tool loaner service. Without the proper diagnostic tools fixin your problem is gonna take longer.

Not sure how we came to that conclusion

Happy to help you out hammer.Wink A 1987 Acura Intergra 1.6L uses a timing belt (rather than a timing chain) and it's an interference engine.WinkWink

I'm well aware of that fact. The conclusion I refer to is that just because the engine cranks, the timing belt can't be broken and there is no valve damage?

Hmmmm. I was wondering about that, too. All it means, is that the starter is working, Hemi. An engine with a broken timing belt will 'crank over' faster than normal because there is no compression.

Hammer and Champlain Sr,

The first thing is I wanna thank both you guy’s for you’re input. You’re comments made me go back and read the posters question again this time more carefully. I’ve never done anything like this before. Writtin for an online auto repair forum is totally new to me. I read the part of the posters question where he said the engine was crankin so I figured his issue was something other than a snapped timing belt. I didn’t even see the last part of the posters question where he said there’s a loud whinning sound and the RPM gage shoots to red line but it wont crank just a whinning noise.

Leechkirsten,

Based on you’re above quote you very well could have snapped the timing belt. In addition to the questions I already asked you can you please tell us the milage on the car and if the timing belt has ever been changed?

I have a service manual and that is what I have been going off of Im new to workin on cars and I guess it dose not help that im a girl

Re: 1987 acura integra wont start Sign In

Since I haven't seen it yet, cover the basics. Pull the cap of & make sure the rotor is turning when the engine is cranked. The shoot some starting fluid down the throttle body to see if that starts the engine. If it doesn't get a spark tester & confirm there is no spark, then we'll go from there depending on what you find out....

For the same problem it's better to just have one thread going. More than one & it starts getting confusing. I removed your other one.

Re: 1987 acura integra wont start Sign In

Ok....Sounds like it started...If it ran normal for a few seconds and died, then you are looking at a fuel problem. You would want to get a noid light & check for injector pulse. Also get a voltmeter or test light and check for power back at the fuel pump....

Now I"m starting to wonder exactly how you checked the main relay. Still way too early to pull the trigger on it but it sure was/is a common failure component for a problem like this on Hondas.......

I asked the question below in my first response but still don’t see an answer. Please answer at you’re earliest convenience so we can help you further.

Is fuel reaching all the plugs? Post the answer to this question by posting the results of a fuel pressure test using a fuel pressure tester.

Another possibility is that the engine could have jumped time.

Re: 1987 acura integra wont start Sign In

You're going to want to get a good wiring diagram and recheck that main relay....

Re: 1987 acura integra wont start Sign In

If you feel like gambling.......Toss a main relay at it............

No guarantees and that would be totally at your own risk.....

You can see here why we didn't go in that direction earlier.
