1987 Chev Cavalier won't start !! Sign In

I have a 1987 Chev Cavalier with a 2.0 engine. The fan wasn't kicking on so I changed the sensor and plug. Then the car wouldn't start at all. Good spark and fuel. It was flooding out , Finally got it going but it was idleing at about 2000 rpm it finally come down to normal but as soon as i put it in gear it goes back up and won't come down also check engine light come on. the code was weak throttle postioning sensor so i replaced it and it still has the high idleing problem, and the fan don't work still overheating new code (pct15) engine temp below -22 and now it won't start. Any help would be great

Not to question you, but are you sure you changed the correct sensor? There is one that tells the ECM what the coolant temperature is so it knows how much fuel to allow into the engine. The other is the sensor that controls the cooling fans. I am working from memory on this, so if I am wrong, please correct me.

Hit the nail on the head on that W2....

Deano just a heads up....you are working with a 5 volt reference signal from the ECM here..... Don't use a test light.... High impedance volt meter only ( digital...no needle type) & use a wiring schematic to be sure you get it right....

I got it running and i changed both of the sensors now the temp sensor and the fan sensor switch and the fan still does not come when plugged in but when you jump it it comes on. And it still has the coolant temp to low but it still overheats with a new thermostat, sensors, radiator. I'm a bit confused is there a relay on the fan somewhere? Thanks
