1985 monte carlo ss must have timing set high to be able to run without cutting off Sign In

I had my 1985 monte carlo ss worked on by an experienced mechanic about 2 days ago and he said he had to set the timing alot higher than usual to get it to stay running without cutting off. he told me that it was because of the high performance cam i put in it causing it to not produce enough vacuum to stay on at a regular timing, my monte carlo has a 305. h.o. engine. i posted this in hopes of getting any suggestions on any way i would be able to produce more vacuum without having to replace my cam. any help will be much appreciated and thanks for your time.

Now you have an aftermarket part (camshaft) in this. If you put that in what was suggested in the info on that cam?

The typical HP cams of yesteryear would make for a rough idle. That would be a reason to raise the idle speed a bit. The engine produces vacuum based on it's compression ratio which isn't changed by the cam. Is this person trying to find a new timing setting to match up with the cam and whatever octane rating is recommended for use with this set up? It's true that advancing the timing results in a higher vacuum reading at idle speed. To really increase that vacuum would be a total engine modification - you don't just dial it up with an adjustment??

Also you don't want a cam with a high duration for the street.
