1985 Ford LTD mid-size power steering/transmission fluids Sign In

Hi,

We just bought this ford and I think some transmission fluid got mixed in with the power steering fluid. There is a big cap with a dip stick that has add cold/hot on it. It is connected to a pump and belt so I think it is the power steering.

At first I thought it was the transmission fluid so I put mayber 8 tablespoons of transmission fluid in then dipped out 4 because it didn't need much. We drove it 1400 miles. Will it damage anything? How can I drain it?

I still can't find a dipstick for for the transmission.

Thanks.

Not as familiar with the mid-sized LTD but almost all Fords I've ever known you could use any ATF for powersteering fluid - it's just hydraulic fluid and the cap may say "use approved fluid" which for the vintage means something better than corn oil! Trans dipstick is usually on passenger's side toward firewall and has a ncikel size dipstick tube which is where you also add - and stick should be marked with instructions on those. Note that trans dipsticks indicate the "hot" fluid level and increments are in pints - not quarts.......

Tom is right. Your power steering will be ok. 90% of Fords (until recently) use trans fluid in the power steering.

Thanks, that makes me feel better. We are wondering why the pump kind of hums or hisses when the wheel is turned? Is that normal or a problem with the pump?

The pump might make some noise if it is as old as the car. They are by nature a little noisier when turned when the pump is forced to work harder. Tou might try bleeding the power steering system. Support the front of car with front wheels off the groung. Disable car so it will not start.(pull coil wire) Then crank engine as you slowly turn the wheel from lock to lock. Then hold it all the way to the right and shut the key off. Look inside the power steering reservoir and see when the little bubbles stop. When they stop, repeat the ceanking but stop on the left side. Wait for bubbles to stop and try starting the car and see if any noise goes away. Good luck. If you turn the car all the way left or right and hold it tight, it will hiss or growl a little normally.
