1980 gmc 350 starter question

its time for my vacation comming up here in a few weeks and im trying to get the bus ready for travle again... 1980 thomas school bus. gmc 1 ton with a 350 and a turbo 400 trans. my question is about the starter. when i got this thing a few year back and it would crank slow when it was warmed up, not over heating. now it does it cold and seems to drain the battery down real quick when your trying to start it up. just now when i was trying to start it up it cranked slow and than it sounded like the starter kicked out from the flywheel too soon on a couple attempts than it wouldn't crank no more it would try but it didn't seem to get enuff juice to turn the engine like the battery where dead im gonna go out and test the battery now and i have a suspision that it will read 12.4 volts. does this sound like a bad starter to you???? would a worn starter draw +++volts and crank slow the battery is only 2 years old and i keep it charged, i start the bus like once a month and let it warm up real good just to keep it charged and flow some oil around the engine and trans.

Yes, it does sound like a bad starter but don't rule out that you could have a bad battery also. Have it tested.

turned out to be a bad wire.... there is supposed to be a heat sheild between the manifold and starter and its really hard to put back on once you get it off and whoever put the starter in must have thrown it away so the heat from the manifold gets to the cable that comes from the battery and tempers it causing problems and keeps your starter in the dark without enuff power to turn the engine so i cut out the bad spot and it cranks right up

We are talking about a battery cable here, right? What did you use to connect it back up?

yes we are talking about a battery cable.... i cut out the bad spot and put a new copper eye on the end, crimped and soldered it starts much better now.... still growls a little but it starts and it may just be that the battery has been sitting and needs a good charge. bad spot removed, it cranks great when jumped by another vehicle so thats why im thinking it just needs a good charge. it could be run down from trying to crank it with the bad spot in that battery cable.... sounds good to me im gonna put it on a slow charge for the day and try it late tonight and see how it does, thanks for the replies

I don't really think you have resolved all your problems and may still have a bad starter or battery.

gonna see what happens after the battery charges for the day and if it still is a problem i will take it up to the shop and have the battery load tested
