1978 toyota corona, wagon. engine 20R. High miles. Good maintenance. Drove the car home and next time I went out it would not stay running like it was starving for gas. verified that I had fuel, changed the fuel filler, Checked vacuum lines and replaced any that showed any age..

I Can track enough gas up to the carbuerator. once at the carbuerator I can see the float window may not be filling properly. I can get the car started and running if I hold the throttle fully open , but then it also eventually dies from lack of fuel. I can visually see the float window empty and not fill.

Hmmm? There's a float and needle valve soon after fuel enters a carb and could have a problem there. May have to take it apart (have a kit ready) to see just what is going on there. You might try some spray solvent like "deep creep" - carb cleaner with line disconnected right at the carb and into that line or hole (after filter but may still have debris there) in hopes of clearing it up??

Do you have access to a fuel pressure guage ? If so, check your fuel line pressure coming from the fuel pump. You just may have a bad pump thats putting out some pressure but not what the carb calls for. Typical line pressure for those cars is 5-8 psi.

Good luck !!

Same suggestions as above. Who knows as they didn't come back to say what worked.

If you know you have fuel pressure to the carb then you may need to check on the float and needle valve as said.

An old trick with some that stuck was to tap on carb with a PLASTIC tool handle (AYOR as that can be a disaster if you aren't paying attention OR make a spark there) which might unstick a needle valve. This is old enough for a wide variety of issues and who knows what might already have been done when or do you?

Ps: It's not really a "maybe" but at the age carb parts and fuel pump rubber, gaskets etc are all in question....

The Toyota carbs had a very fine mesh screen that would plug up, internally. The only known fix as I know is an overhaul. Good luck.
