1973 GMC Died While Driving
|

1973 GMC C3500 7.4L, Rochester carb., GM HEI72K miles on rebuilt motor
The truck started and ran fine for 12 miles. When I slowed down to make a turn, the engine died. I was able to crank the motor with no problem. The engine would start and then would die again. I could smell raw gas. I was able to get it started, revved the engine a few times and was able to get it idle. I opened the hood to check for fuel leaking from the mechanical fuel pump and didn't see anything. I was able to finish my errands, starting and stopping several times and the truck ran smooth on the 30 miles back home.
2-3 times in the past year the engine has lost power for a split second while cruising a freeway speeds. I've change the battery, positive cable, cap, rotor, plugs and wires last year. I replaced the alternator the year before.

It's going to be difficult to confirm since it is so random but the symptoms point toward a bad HEI module.

? HEI - Yes, look at it inside under cap. Look for wires at each end of black thing mounted flat. See if those connections are good or rubbing inside at all. They can't at all. If so fix that. IDK, I never replaced a module that was intermittent it was cooked or not. You said HEI for '73 I thought it was the next model year doesn't matter match it up if you suspect it IDK what model year it would be from the first few years of it were screwy for those,

Update: The truck died at least six times driving to and from the auto parts store. I replaced the 4 pin HEI module and checked the wires for obvious damage (none found). I drove the truck 40 miles today and it ran great.

Sounds like success - GREAT! Laugh/cry, had to do one stayed dead with a 7,000 Lb trailer wasn't so fun. Found one and got going. IDK life of the things if not wild heat (my case) or rubbing wires just the luck of it.
