Ok,
So I have had this 1964 Impala SS Hardtop for about 2 years and just now started to work on it. The engine is a 350 with a 2 speed automatic on the floor. I purchased a brake disc conversion kit from Summit and just ran into my first problem. When trying to take the bak drums off I noticed that I have to take the axles off. The problem that I am running into is that I CANT TAKE THEM OFF. Is this because there is C clips in the 3rd member or what. I took off all 10 bolts and the housing only comes off about 1/4 to 1/2 inch out and then it feels like something is holding it in. I have looked all over the internet to see if someone could tell me what kind of rear end I have and if there is some kind of book that tells how to take it out. PLEASE HELP

Is this a drop out third member or does it have a cover on the rear? If it's a drop out, should be able to remove the axles, then it should come out. If it has a cover, remove the cover, push the axles inward towards the third member, remove the C clips, pull out the axles.

Well,
The cover on the end does not come off so I'm guessing that it is a drop out third. But the problem is that when I try to pull the housing off of the 3rd member it only comes out about 1/2 inch. I have tried to wiggle it out, rock it back and forth, left to right and nothing. That is why I think that something is holding it in. I have tried to push the 3rd member back in as it was and push the axles in and listen to hear the c clips fall if it does have c clips. But other than that thats about it. Thanks for the reply thou

Joe; It is a drop out type, then. No C clips. I've not experienced it, myself, but one of my techs has told me that there is a spreader that is required that enlarges the differential housing enabling the third member to come out. Does it seem that the ring and pinion is too large for the opening? By, maybe 1/8"? or less? That'd be my guess. I guess it may be similar to the spreader used for GM exhaust manifolds?

Any idea how this spreader looks. I have talked to the local parts stores here and they say that it should just fall out.

Check with a rear end shop; My tech used to work for one and he said it was a shop owned tool. He said any shop that specializes in differential overhauls would more than likely have one. Not sure if Snap On or MAC may have one available.

Ist the center will not come out unless you remove the axels!!!
To remove the axels you will see a large hole in the wheels stud flange about 1" diamater Take a 9/16ths socket on a 4" extension put it through this hole and remove 4 bolts that hold the bearing retainer and backing plate in place. the backing plate will remain in place the axel should slide right out if not tap the flange with a hammer. I have done hundreds of these.

Is that backing plate the one that is bolted on with the 4 bolts? I have take all the bolts off that you have talked about and attempted to pull and push the axles as you have said. I have not tried to hammer the flange. I can try it. I will get back to yall later and let you know the outcome. Thanks for the input.

Whoa! You haven't pulled the axles, first? Refer back to the first couple of posts. Once you've removed the flange bolts as machineryman stated, if the axles still don't want to come out, put the brake drum on the axle backwards and put the lug nuts on a few turns. (Don't tighten them). Doing this will allow you to use the brake drum as a slide hammer. A few good jerks outwards should be enough.

OK,
I just got the axles off and what I did was bang the crap out of the flange. The bolts were already taken off, I don't know if I mentioned that or not. So I got the axles off and I was wondering on what holds them back in when I do put them back on. Is it going to be those 4 bolts that were on the flange? Seems kinda weak in that area.

The 'flange' is actually the bearing retainer. Yes, that is what holds the axles in. If they are damaged badly, probably should replace them if you are replacing the axle bearings.
