05 cavalier wont start

o5 cavalier would not start ran great the day before. I noticed no compression. reaplaed timing set. It was out of time. chain was jumping the intake sproket. replaced crank sensor. replaced fuel filter cleaned fuel tank screen. not dirty. checked screen it fuel regulator not dirty.new plugs gapped to .42. new coilpack and igniton module. cleaned the IAV very dirty ran for 30 seconds and died wont start again po300 code is the only code i get. took it back apart rechecked timing twice. it spits trying to start but wont even squirt gas in the intake and it would not start.

Did you do another compression test and leakdown test? This engine will damage valves easily.

no I didnt i did have the valves ground though and i have a habit of turning the engine by hand before i try starting it after i mess with timing i didnt get any resistance. I will check the compression again though

The valves can easily be damaged during the head installation if not done correctly.

I dont believe thats the case but I am not perfect. I will run another compression check. I dont understand why it jumped time in the first place. Everything looked ok when I tore it apart. but I watched the chain jump myself. This has been a real pain. thank you

The plastic guides and tensioners wear out and have to be replaced with the chain.

They was in the kit new guides chain and tensioner and 3 gears. All the new parts are in it. I find it hard to believe its still timing because it started ater putting that all in. It ran great for a couple blocks then died. I am thinking it is somthing really simple that I am overlooking.

the compression is still at about 147 it only changes maybe a pound difference in all four cylinders

Back to basics then
All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.
Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.
These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.
1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.
2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.
3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.
4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.
Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.
