05 Yukon instrument cluster lights out

05 Yukon instrument cluster lights out

I have a 2005 GMC Yukon. The instrument cluster lights are out. The digital lighting (odometer/transmission) works. Cig. lighters, all other interior/exterior lights work, but light behind gauges and a/c buttons is out. The dimmer switch seems to be working properly as dome lights come on and the digital read off dims and brightens. All signs point to a fuse, but I can't find it. Consulted owner's manual to try to find the correct fuse. Pulled two fuses (including one labeled for instrument panel cluster/driver information center), both were good.

No, it doesn't point to a fuse. It points to a bad instrument cluster. You need a bidirectional scan tool that can test the lights via the BCM.

IP cluster illumination power comes from the body control module. You'll need to remove the instrument cluster to gain access to the connector. Check for power on connector A pin 11 red wire by back probing with a volt meter. Should have battery voltage with headlamps on. If power is good, do a voltage drop on connector A pin 12 black wire. Should be less than 0.5 V. Post your results.

If the instrument cluster was bad, would that cause the light behind a/c buttons to go out??

Either way, your going to need a wiring schematic and a volt meter to trace where the power or ground is being lost. The body control module supplies power and controls the dimming functions of the lamps in both the cluster and the ac control panel.
Without those tools and knowing where and how to check those circuits, it is near impossible to give you any sort of educated guess.

Be sure to follow HT and DS's advice because they are pros and know the proper way to troubleshoot to find the correct problem but I had a similar problem with my 2003 Sierra and mine ended up being bulbs that were out. I had cluster lights, radio lights, and hvac lights out. I've heard that the cluster isn't serviceable but the bulbs can be replaced as can the bulbs on other components. You have to make sure you know what you're doing because it can be all too easy to fry something. The ac is a royal pain. I replaced all of my bulbs with leds, but if I were to do it over again, I would probably just buy a used unit. The digital are cheaper than the manual. But, just because I had a similar issue doesn't mean our issues are the same. Do the correct testing to find out. If you don't do the correct testing many times it ends up becoming more of a headache because you end up causing more issues and it ends up costing more in the long run.

Well, I found the bad fuse. It was one of the fuses for the body control module. When replaced twice, the new fuses popped right away so there's a short somewhere. Won't have time to tear into it until tomorrow.

Which fuse? Is there any aftermarket equipment installed or recent work done before you noticed the illumination problem?
