04 Nissan Maxima Random Starting Issue Sign In

Hi Everyone-

I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima and am having a random issue, I'm hoping someone can help..

The car ran perfectly until one day back in May.. The car would not start.. The engine would crank but it felt like it wasn't getting any gas. I tried starting it for a while, then let it sit for about 10 min, tried again, repeat over and over, but it wouldn't start. Eventually I tried spraying start fluid into the air intake, it then idled rough for a few seconds (I assume it was running on only ether), then seemed to "catch" and again ran flawlessly.

Since then it has done this about 5 times, everytime it was when starting the car for the first time for the day. Each time this happens, no matter how long I try to start the car, it won't start (it will only crank). Each time, I'll eventually spray some start fluid into the intake, it will idle rough for a few seconds then "catch" and run perfectly..

I'm not getting a service engine light, does anyone have any ideas?

I was thinking that maybe the fuel pump is starting to go and when there is lower voltage (when starting) it is malfunctioning, but when the car is running and it gets full voltage it works fine...

Any suggestions\ideas would be welcome.. Thanks!

I haven't seen this problem on any Nissans but with any weird problem the 1st thing to do is make sure you are working with a good battery & clean connections....Get the battery tested...

Then if there is any overdue maintenance tune up wise, go ahead and get this done, it needs this regardless.
Have the codes pulled anyway, not all failures turn on the light. Make sure to clean the throttle body as well will a brush and spray some cleaner down there while it's running....

After that it going to be time to break out the meters & gauges and start testing some components.......
