04 Dodge Neon misfire

I have an '04 Dodge Neon 2.0 L 4 cyl 91k miles. It has been idling rough and the service engine light came on with a misfire code. It starts up a little rough even though it starts right up, the main problem is rough idling. The exhaust also does a "puff puff puff" puttering. The exhaust is clear and not white or black. I changed the plugs and wires, and the engine isn't burning oil or using coolant. After I changed the plugs and wires the check engine light went out but the problem rough idle is still going on. What is up?

The next step would be to take a complete compression test and examine the plugs closely as they are removed to see which ones are burning clean and which ones are not. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

jack; To add, have you had the trouble codes retrieved? This vehicle has 'misfire detection' and will tell you which cylinder is causing the misfire. These engines also have coil problems. Most parts stores will retrieve the codes for you and you can post them here. Loren SW Washington
