Does the starter crank the engine?

Make sure the battery if fully charged and have it tested. Also make sure your battery connections are clean and tight. That's a good place to start.

ok so the battery has a good charge and all the cables are tight. its almost like the starter isnt cranking the engine for some reason. all you hear when you turn the key is the starter

Little confused here. The starter motor is running, but isn't spinning the engine?

Just to make sure, do you see the big pulley on the front of the engine turning when you attempt to start the engine?

If not, either the starter drive is F ed up, the starter ring gear on the flywheel/flex plate is missing teeth, or the flex plate is broken (if automatic).

When you had the starter inspected, did they make sure the overrunning clutch in the starter bendix was good and the pinion is being thrown out?

Just a question really on this - Do you hear one click and then the hmmmmm or just the hummmming noise alone? A bad starter drive can do that or it isn't throwing out to engage OR teeth gone.

Is this easy enough to take starter out and have tested for you? I would. You can get just parts to a starter but don't suggest that for DIYers nor the best fix for the long run,
