Hello,
I have a 03 Buick lesabre limited and the air bag light is on. It was scanned and no codes come up, any suggestions as to how to reset it or where to start to lookto get rid of this light? Could it be the module itself?

You can't get air bag codes using a generic code reader. You need a professional level scan tool capable of accessing the air bag module. There will be codes there if the module can be accessed.

it was scanned with a professional scanner, that's why we are stumped at where to go from here. if we should change the sensors or the module or if there is a way to check the wiring...also could changing any of this stuff trip the airbag to deploy?

No, you haven't used the right equipment yet. You need to access the module before you do anything and yes, you can accidentally set off an air bag if you don't know what you are doing.

ok, well if Im not using the right scanner, do you have a link of what the proper scanner is? just so I can see if we are indeed using the wrong thing? I know its just not your everyday OBD reader that you get for $100 at any local auto store.
(even though we tried those too)

I figured we could deploy it that's why I wanted to see if someone could recommend the best places to start the process of getting this fixed.

The equipment you would need costs upward of $5000. I'm not going to give you any advice on messing with this. It is far too dangerous for an inexperienced person.

What professional scanner do you have?

its my uncles scanner, so Im not sure but it cost him $9000 (yes thousand) it scans and downloads software and all kinds of info from the internet and does a lot of stuff that I have no clue about. my dad just took the car over to him to scan, and they couldnt get anything to come up. I would have to find out the exact model from him. Ill try to post it on here as soon as I can. Lets say it was the right scanner and nothing comes up what could potentially cause it? Im sure there are millions of possibilities... but are there more probable causes for this to happen?

If the scanner has the capability of accessing the SIR module, you should be able retrieve codes and look at datastream information with a high dollar scan tool.

There are numerious reasons it can't communicate from network issues to a faulty SIR module. If that scanner can't access it, you should try another scanner that has that capability to be sure it isn't some type of software issue with your $9K scan tool.

ok, Ill find out his scanner model and go from there. I also just found out there might be a possible recall on certain VIN #'s for the lesabres too, so Im going to check into that. but I'm done for tonight. Thanks again for the help.

When you find out what scanner he has, you also want to know what version of update it has.

well, I got it scanned, for some reason it didn't work the first time, but we tried again over the weekend and we got a code. (I believe it was 01001) which meant the module was not communicating with the rest of the system, so with the scanner we did a system reset and everything went back to normal, the light went out and all is good now. thanks guys for your help anyway.

Just wanted to unlock this an ask something out of curiosity. Was the air bag module replaced recently? That code pops up when the SDM (air bag module) restraint ID number doesn't match the restraint ID number in the instrument panel module.

Also wanted to add they did have a safety recall on certain Lesabres for that year that fall within the VIN breakpoint stated in the recall information. There was a problem with some type of weld in the dual stage driver's side air bag that could fracture during air bag deployment causing metal and plastic to be thrown out. You should call your local dealer and have them check to see if the recall is open. The recall number is 02V222000. You can also find it on the NHTSA website.

Im not actually sure if it was or not....(we just bought the car used..knowing the light was on) we did a carfax on it before we bought it to see if it was in a accident and it came up clean. Although we know it could not have been reported too if it was. (car shows no signs of an accident or a touch up paint job etc)

Yes, I knew about the recall and a dealer was called. It wasn't on the list for cars being recalled.

Thanks for your answer. Just curious. If you happen to run into the code popping back up, let us know and we can reopen this thread for you. Hopefully it stays away for good. Thanks for the follow ups.Smile
