03 Pontiac 3.8L "Value of starting to use Synthetic oil at 110,000 miles?	Sign In

HI All, I have a 2003 Grand Prix with about 110,000 miles and live in the Minneapolis area. I was wondering if there would be any advantage to using synthetic oil at this point. I have used conventional Napa 10w-30 since I bought it about 3 years ago. There are a lot of rumors out there saying it will start leaking but others saying it would turn over better with 10w-30 syn when its -20F. I really like this car and want it to last a long time. Currently it will use about 1/2 a quart every 3000. I just dump in the partial qt leftover from each oil change at around 2000 miles to keep it at full. Thanks for any advive!

JMO, but I'd just keep doing what you've been doing. Yes, synthetic oils are 'better', but there is nothing wrong with what you are doing. Synthetics are more expensive. People that use them tend to 'try and go further' between oil changes. I use synthetic Amsoil in both of my vehicles, but started using it on both, from new. I still change my oil and filter every 3000 miles. The claims of better fuel economy are questionable. Engine protection, I'm sure, over many miles. But, to start at 110K, don't know if it would be that beneficial. Kind of 'up to you'. I always thought that switching to synthetic would start oil leaks, so I don't recommend it to customers with over 100K miles. The Amsoil rep says that's a myth.

I started using Amsoil 0w20 in my Ford f-150 when it had 100k miles on it. I now have 235k and it is running flawlessly.
