02 taurus p. steering prob

prob 1 i replaced power steering pump on my 02 ford taurus ses with v-6 due to leaking. how do you remove the serpentine pulley, i used an allen wrench with breaker bar and still wouldnt break loose. prob 2 i have since replaced pump with a good used one with pulley. manual said to turn wheel left/right to remove air. i notice my fluid in resovoir is frothy like it was run through a blender, any ideas, thanks jack bikebarn

Jack up front end until the wheels are free of the ground and safely support it.
Unplug wiring going to coil so it will not start. (The wires that plug into the base of coil on drivers side)
Crank engine over while turning wheel stop to stop about 3 times.
Lock steering to the right until froth dissipates.
Crank engine while turning wheel lock to lock about 3 times
Lock steering to the left until froth dissipates.
Keep this sequence until all the frothy fluid is gone. Usually about 3 times max.
Drive vehicle.
This should solve the problem. If fluid stays frothy, there is a leak in the system allowing air to be sucked into the steering. hate to say it, but rack is the usual culprit.

thank you for the feedback, will give it a shot and post results. in the back of my mind somewhere rack popped in, but i was trying not to go there. thanks jack bikebarn

Try the method W2O posted, if it still has bubbles in it drive it for a day or so & keep an eye on the level. If it's just air in the system, it will work itself out. After a day or so if there is still air & it's whining, then there is another problem somewhere else.
The pulley takes a special puller to remove & install it, some parts houses will remove and install it for you it you've bought the pump from them.

thanks for the tip, i was going to salvage the pulley but couldnt get the allen center screw to budge. i thought this might have to be removed before using a puller. will post results a few days after trying suggested methods. p.s. great site with helpful members for the do it yourselfer.

OH, forgot to tell ya. The allen hole in the center of the pulley is actually the shaft that goes through the pump and makes the pulley move. As sidom stated, the pulley is a press on fit. Parts houses have a loan a tool program as he stated. Good luck and keep us informed.

thanks, glad you told me, i was thinking allen had to come out first before useing puller. p..s not to ask a stupid question but i would be bleeding simuliar to brakes right, with resovoir cap secured when doing wheel rotations ? sorry senior moments playing catch-up with me.

Leave the cap off so you can watch the fluid. If there is a lot of air, it will spill over. Place a catch basin under the pump to keep from making a real mess.
