02 ford ranger exhaust leak	Sign In

I have a 2002 ford ranger edge and i brought it in for an inspection and they say that the exhaust flange is leaking. i started my engine up and i could feel the exhaust leaking through the flange where the tail pipe meets another pipe. it's a stock exhaust. the bolts spring bolts are pretty rusted. is there a gasket in between these 2 pipes? how do i know which flange bolts and gasket to get? thank you for you help

Bolt and spring type connections may not use a gasket - just a flared pipe and receiving socket type pipe connection. The big deal is if they break! Oxy/Acet heat will usually take care of rusted parts such that they can be removed and not break. Try PB = Power Blaster if you don't have torches or know how to use them well but do anything NOT to break them as then it's real hard to deal with many times.

Good job to farm out if you don't have the stuff for that,

tom is right, i have an 02 Ranger XLT and i replaced the exhaust system with a cat back from gibson. the spring bolts help keep the ball & socket joint tight. they usually leak due to rust through or maybe perhaps you hit a section of exhaust piping on something and cocked it thus resulting in the unseating of the ball/socket.

might be a good time to look into a cat back exhaust system.

im usually a diehard flowmaster guy but they didnt make a bolt on kit for my ranger. Gibson did and i was very happy with the price/quality/fit/ease of installation. would recommend them again.
