02 Toyota Corolla shaking problems

I have a 2002 Toyota Corolla. The problem is whenever I'm driving and get up to about 55 mph the car starts shaking extremely bad. It only shakes whenever I give the car gas. As long as I am not giving it gas, the car doesn't shake and it only shakes when I'm going 55 mph or faster. I have had my tires balanced and rotated numerous times and I just had my front end alligned and I'm still having the problem. Can somebody help me out on what the problem could be. Thanks alot.

Hard to be sure but the half shafts (usually just one at a time) can do this. When a CV joint in them goes bad they usually make crunching noises on turns but I know that they fail in this mannor too. Could be tricky to diagnose if there isn't obvious play in them. U-joints in RWD cars used to do this too. Just a thought on where to check - T

A quick check, look at the weights on the tires. if you have a lot of them or if they are up there in weight, your tires may have some bumbs in them. The fact that you did say its only when you hit the gas may rule this out, I just fix this same problem on my car and it turned out to be the tires. one way to really tell is when your going over 55 mph does the steering wheel really shake and vibrate, or does the whole car shake? My rear view mirror was also a little blurry until i fixed the tires. Anyone have any other ideas?

The steering wheel doesnt shake or vibrate, just the whole car does. I asked this same question on another message board and he said to have my engine mounts checked. Does that sound right?

They need to be ruled out but you called this extreme shaking of the car and bad mounts (trans too) but it's been my experience that a bad mount makes clunks and a buzzing feeling thru the car if the rubber is missing and has metal to metal contact. It's going to be tough to get help over this holiday weekend. Seems like you have ruled out tires and during balancing a bent rim should have been seen - but those problems are generally not sensitive to the load you put on the engine. So check the mounts but I think this will turn out to be a CV joint (you have four) hidden by rubber boots, or a wheel bearing but again I would think they would give you more symptoms even at lower speeds. The front end and all its parts needs to be checked for freeplay and if need be pull the driveshafts and test the free motion of the CV joints and spin the bearings in hand - they should be silent. Let us know as this saga continues, - T

Ok, I noticed as I was driving today that the problem doesn't start until it goes into 5th gear. Is that possible? Can just 5th gear in the transmission be messed up and causing the problem? If so, then should I get it fixed immediately or would it be ok for another few weeks?

I surprised I didn't see the post just before this about the 02 shaking. If yours is doing the exact same thing as I would have said to that person get it checked out further now! You have seemed to have ruled out the common tire and wheel problems - it will be harder to find other sources and you may need some help. Don't know what else to say that wasn't mentioned in this thread. A good shop that does specialize in alignments (alignment alone should not do this) should be able to figure it out. Wish I could drive the car and have a better idea as this is a bit different and I don't know of it as common but someone might. Make sure the front end parts like tie rod ends and all are good and the CV joints in the half shafts may have to be removed to inspect. Let us know, T

Same things to check. CV joints, bearings, motor/trans mounts, wheels tight, brakes ok all the stuff that can could be load related, T

All I can say is get ready for complete failure. I had the same problem just before they told me my engine was gone. At first it started as a knocking sound when accelerated. I thought it was the wheel but then it got worse. I popped the hood and the engine was shaking. My first thought was the engine mounts need to be replaced. I took it to the shop and they came to the conclusion that the engine was gone. A lot of people are having this problem. Toyota Sucks!

I believe your problem is coming from the front axles also. Check the inner CV joints at the transaxle and I feel certain you'll find them loose. This causes them to have excessive movement at higher speeds. Let me know what you find out and good luck.

I have a 99 with the same problem. It's not the wheels and tires. It's not the engine. I haven't checked the CV joints yet, but that is next.

I was having a lot of front end vibration on my 99 Corolla and it was worst at 80km/h. Turns out my trans axle mount needed to be replaced. Basically my whole engine would torque during acceleration and caused the car to feel very sluggish. If I were you I would get the transaxle mount checked.

I had the same thing wrong with my 02 BMW 3 series, the dealership diagnosed it as Bad control arms. I shakes while accelerating, and shakes while braking too. They explained that while this feels like unbalanced tires and bad rotors, it is in fact not either, jus the control arms themselves that have gone bad. Good Luck.

My 2002 Toyota Corolla has been rocking side-to-side noticeably at low speeds and vibrating (entire car) once I hit 45mph. When I just release my foot off the brake and let it roll forward it feels as if my entire car is rolling with a definite limp. I have made an appointment to have my tires balanced, but my symptoms don't seem to fit this solution. Anyone experience something similar? Any advice to share?

Hi From what you describe ,you have a broken belt in one of the tires... This is usually an unsafe tire to be driving on. I would strongly suggest taking it in to a Tire Center as soon as possible to have it inspected/replaced. Thats my opinion
