01 GMC Jimmy Stalls when low gas or braking Sign In

Hi,

I have a 2001 GMC Jimmy that has been stalling when I am low on gas and the vehicle is slowing. I also noticed it does this more often when the vehicle is pointing downhill. It has been going on for about 1 year now and it occurs when I have about 1/4th a tank of gas or less. When it stalls the car will start right back up when I turn the key. Later, if I fill the gas tank till it is full the problem will completely resolve. I changed the fuel filter after this started and the problem didn't change at all. The gas guage on my vehicle is accurate. Any ideas?

Info about my car:
Still has original fuel pump
New fuel filter
4x4
4.3L V6
102k miles

Thanks for your time!

Sounds like your fuel sending unit in the tank is not reading correctly. When it says 1/4 tank it is almost empty. When you go up or down a hill or stop suddely it is sucking up air instead of fuel. Replace pump and sending unit.

Jeff,

Thanks for your reply. My gas gauge is accurate. Is the "sending unit" you mentioned the same as the gas intake (within the tank) for the engine? Could it have become dislodged and this is why it is sucking air? Also, why do you think my pump should be replaced?

Thanks,

Jim

The pump and the sending unit are all one assembly, in the tank.
