2002 ford ranger. i replaced both left and right rear parking brake cables. i currently have the rear drums dissassembled thinking it would help. then i removed the cable from the backing plate all together. before i removed the originals, i put a drill bit in the parking brake pedal mechanism to keep it from sucking up the slack. no matter what or which way i try to pull the cables, i come up about a 1/2" short of reaching the coupler on the intermediate cable. it appears, i need to overcome the spring force from the coil spring on the brake shoe end of the cable any ideas? (yes the cables are the same length as the cables as that came off) __________________________________________________ 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2002 Ford Ranger 2004 Toyota Corolla 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1

Ayup! Been there, done that - got the T-shirt. You do need to hold back the springs in the back brakes - I use needle nose vice grips after retracting them which is tricky but there is a tool for that - mine by KD-Tools which when squeezed two tong ends move apart. Kind of like reversing snap ring pliers but with slots that hover the braided cable and push on the lead barrel and the spring. When retracted at one or both and held there you will just make that center cable barrel ends into the connector if that's the exact item (think so) where you need the last hook up. This helps if you don't have a helper or to have the tools. I've managed those alone with just the vice grips on even just one side most of the time. Check cable adjustment after together with back brakes properly adjusted and do leave some play or clicks at the hand brake or they will bind up in certain conditions. I think that's what's giving you trouble. If not - hit back and we'll try harder, T
