I have a 1992 s-10 blazer with the cpi motor. I cant get it timed because the marks on the harmonic balancer dont coincide with topdead center on number one cylinder i have compared the balancer to a new aftermarket one and they match. I have the set timing connector unplugged. I was wondering if there is some oddball balancer for this

I don’t want to ask a dumb question but are you sure that the timing light is connected to # 1 cylinder; left (driver’s) side front cylinder? You wouldn’t be the first person including myself to accidentally connect it to the wrong one. There’s nothing special about setting timing on these things and it sounds like you’re trying to adjust it properly. Are you sure you’ve disconnected the proper tan/black wire for the EST by-pass? The 4/3Lt by-pass wire usually breaks out of the wiring conduit near the distributor but on some of the older trucks the by-pass wire was under the dash near the heater box on the passenger side. Maybe pull #1 plug; turn the engine until the balancer lines up with the zero marker; then check if the piston is actually at TDC? Dan. Canadian "EH"
