84 ford mustang built 302 automatic trans will crank and idle fine when put in gear it dies what is the problem

Some questions first:
Is this an original set up? Does it use a carb?
If it runs well in general it might be associated with pushing the brake and not so much an engine problem itself. Try just pressing brake and NOT putting it in gear. If idle stumbles then check hose to and the vacuum brake booster and a check valve used right on it,
