when i pess the gas pedal it barely move

1993 Ford Explorer when i am driving all of a sudden the speed drop real fast and when the i press the gas pedal allmost to the floor it barely move and all of a sudden it take off real fast and then the speed drops again and the check engine light do come on and go off back and fourth
