what is a map sensor

i am having problem with stalling and chugging i have narrowed it down to a sensor i think and i am not sure what a map sensor does i have disconnect it and it seems to run ok but there is alot of black smoke comes out the tail pipe is there anyone out there that may no what my problem is

Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor, measures the changes in intake manifold pressure which results from engine load and speed changes and converts this to a voltage output which is sent to the computer in the vehicle. The ECM uses this information to control fuel delivery and ignition timing.
