vauxhall astra seems to be firing in airbox? Sign In

hi guys, i've got a problem with my Astra,
Vauxhall Astra
1993
1.4 LS (C14NZ)
the problems started 2 weeks ago when she overheated. I put in a new thermostat and replaced rocker gasket at the same time. My car knowledge is very limited so i took off cam belt to remove cam belt housing so that I could access the thermostat. Refitted cam belt but slightly out of sync (unbeknown to me!) and when I tried to start her the revs fell away as I let out the clutch. I've had the timing reset properly now but still wont tick over. Turn the key for 5 seconds and then I get a Whump! sound in the airbox which holds the air filter. Put a new distributor cap on, checked HT leads and plugs but still the same Whump! fuel is getting through as plugs were wet. We did a diagnostic which said that there was a MAP sensor fault...this was before we readjusted the timing, so was wandering if this could be the problem or the inlet manifold gasket? really stumped! any help would be much appreciated,
cheers, matt

matty; The cam timing belt cannot be off even one tooth. Did I read it correctly that you had the belt reset correctly?
If the cam timing is off, the manifold vacuum will be poor, thus setting the MAP code. Make certain that the belt is correct, then do a compression test to make sure you didn't bend any valves. If you are lucky, the plugs may be fuel fouled, and 'washed' the cylinders with fuel. While you have the plugs out, do a 'wet' test, too. I doubt that this is the problem, but make sure the cooling system is full and bled of any air. If the coolant temp sensor isn't getting a correct reading, the fuel mixture will go full rich, thinking the engine is cold.

Smile Hi Loren,
Many thanks to you for taking the time to try and help me out. You'll be glad to know (but not as glad as me!) that it's all fixed now and running like a dream! Had to take cam belt off, remove No.1 spark plug and used a screwdriver to tell when piston was at top, then turned cam by hand so valves on No.1 were also at top...then put HT leads back on in order of the rotor arm position. Starts first time again! No more nagging wife and kids!!! Thanks once again,
Matt
