You can put in a 1.9 unless you want to make custom motor and trans mounts, custom CV shafts, custom trans linkage and an aftermarket ECM that needs to be programmed fully using HP tuners software while run on a dynamometer. Obviously, this would cost far more than this is worth. I feel your pain with this. Back in 08 I unfortunately owned one myself and got to replace a cracked head. But 1.9 is all you will be replacing it with. May as well either scrap the car or rebuild the engine. I'd recommend scrap the car. Pretty much anything of this year that went to the salvage yard went there because of the engine.

Go to a few rally races and talk to some of the pit crew members. Maybe you'll get a better idea what it takes to make a good rally car. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

DS has a good point on that. See what other racers are running and how they build their cars to compete. I personally would pick Subaru as a rally platform. They are tough, already have a great AWD system and they can be had with a respectable turbocharged engine from the factory. Plenty of used ones out there to find that could be put into race-ready form with the right amount of work.
