truck burning ecessive fuel Sign In

I HAVE A 1992 TOYOTA TRUCK THAT SEEMS TO BE LOSING MPGS LATELY. IT SEEMS TO BE USING A LOT MORE FUEL THESE DAYS. IT IS A 4CYL. 2.4L 22RE ENGINE. I HAVE CHANGED THE CAP/ROTOR/WIRES RECENTLY. COULD THAT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT???

sings69; Fuel economy is one of the toughest things to deal with as there are so many things that can affect it.
Tire pressure. Air/fuel mix. Engine temp., ect. If the engine is running smooth, and you didn't mess with the distributor, I doubt that it is anything you've done by changing plugs and wires assuming that you gapped the plugs correctly.
Any shop that does emission work can check the engine efficiency very easily. A gas analyzer will show air/fuel mix
(14.7:1 is perfect) and CO2 reading (above 14% is great). One of the biggest mistakes is allowing the engine to run too cool. In the old days, we wanted the engines to run cool (at least we thought). Now, they must reach at least 190F to even begin to be efficient. Most will run in the 200-220F range. Keeping the injectors clean is also very important. This can be done with an injection service. (not the snake oil they sell for the tank). This cleans the injectors, throttle body, intake, valves, ect. Most will notice an improvement in fuel economy and performance. (I should get a commision for recommending MotorVacSmile) But, it really is a service that you'll notice. And, should be done at 40K intervals.

When you changed the cap and rotor you didnt adjust the timeing did ya? Id suggest double checking the timing make sure its on point. besides that everything right down to tire pressure has an impact on fuel economy...
