timing problem on 97 Chev Cavalier Sign In

NEED HELP! 97 CHEV CAVALIER.95,000 Miles...2.2 was driving and it quit...acted like a timing chain, opened it up and sure enough only pieces of the tensioner were left with a complete chain and gears...only tensioner chewed up.

Replaced the whole ball of wax...gears, chain and tensioner have checked and double& triple checked have the gears in the right alinement with tdc... & gears with the tabs on the tensioner.
have spark at all plugs, plenty of fuel and pressure...when try to start it sounds like it is out of time. Putttts and spitts and backfires.

On our s10 blazer there is a timing connector wire that needs to be disconnected and re connected when work is completed...is there such a thing on the Cavalier?
Want to check the cam shaft sensor but don't know where it is located can you give me any ideas on these problems? Would appreciate any help I can get ...really baffled.
thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

was it actually out of time when you replaced the chain?... I know that era of 2.2L is known for head gaskets.
Engine light on? if so what codes are present.

not necessarily a interferance engine may allow tollerance few degrees one way or the other and if it skipped on tooth dosen't nessicairly mean the valve made contact with the piston. If you are conserned that if there is a bent valve you can do a leakdown test.
