I have a 2001 Chevy Tracker 2 dr. soft top 4x4.
I cannot find any info in the service manual, from the dealer or mechanics I know as to replacement of the timing chains ( there are two). They seem to fail according to other discussion forums at between 60,000 and 150,000 miles and take the engine with them.
Has anyone knowing this replaced them before they failed and if so how difficult is it ( back yard mechanic) and what is the cost?
Also and I think a bit more straight forward ......ws wipers making a screeching noise even with the wiper arms and blades pulled away from the glass. How do I get at the hidden control arms to fix or lubrlicate?

It's pretty hard to give you advice on an engine repair when you don't even list the engine size or mileage.

OK...thanks for the reply......2001 Chevy Tracker, soft top, 2 dr., 2 liter, 4x4,137,000 miles and all more or less good to go. Made in Mexico ( tooled up for Canada), Suk made the tranny I think....a real hybrid of bits and bobs. But it's a strong little truck.

As a rule we usually don't make preemptive repairs to timing chains but this might be an exception. It is an interference engine which means big time damage if it breaks while driving. You're at the mileage where it becomes a concern on that vehicle so it might be in your best interest to replace it before it breaks.

Thanks....Since I plan on taking the Tracker to Mexico ( spend the winters there) and leaving it I will do or have the chains replaced. You can leave a vehicle in Mex. when it's 10 years old. You pay a tax but then you can fly down.
Does the engine have to come out to change the timing chains?
