ticking engine Sign In

i have an 88 gmc 1500 with a 350. the engine ticks. the thing that is strange is there is no pattern or timing of the tick , it just comes and goes. any suggestions.

It's probably a worn camshaft and with the great Chev V8 you can fake it for a while by tightening down a rocker arm just a smidge at a time. Keep good oil in it and it will last a long time.

If that's it the hard part is finding the one that's doing it. A feeler gauge under the rocker arm while it's running will tell which one it is, T

Hope it works. That tid bit from a pr*ck who has toured the entire US of A in some cars that shouldn't have made it out of a driveway!! Wink T
