I have 1990 jeep 6-cly cherokee.I had a blown (closed system)expansion tank.Jeep was always running a little hot.(live in florida)So I changed with a new tank & thermostat 180*..Runs fine now,but was told that i should have a 195* thermostat in there because the computer will sence the difference & will run richer fuel to engine..whats your opinion???????

I agree that if the engine is not running at its “normal” or intended operating temperature the computer will enrichen the mixture; whether its running to cold or to hot.
A cold engine needs the rich mixture because the fuel cannot atomize properly and will condense on the cold metal; the computer enriches an overly hot engine in an attempt to cool the engine; rich mixtures burn cooler in the combustion chamber. The catalytic converter doesn’t like these rich mixtures but what’s the lesser of two evils, a cat or an engine?
I would test the actual temperature of the engine; there are a number of ways to do this. A scan tool, if (I can’t remember) the computer back then for this model gives up a data list, a laser thermometer or by installing a mechanical gauge to confirm that the factory gauge is accurate.
If you do find that a 195 thermostat is making the engine run to hot, look for the root cause.
As in a partially clogged rad restricting coolant flow, fan clutch not drawing the proper amount of air, anything restricting airflow (leaves or dirt stuck to exterior of rad), retarded ignition timing; these are a few things that can cause this.
