sunfire pontiac
about 145,000 highway miles
2.2 engine,stick 5 speed
ok here go's, car wont start with key, batt good ,starter good took it out had it tested, put it back in it worked a few time
but not now .i start it by pushing it but i cant do that forever.
1. can it be a short, what to look for frist?
2.ingnition switch ? 39.99 not too bad but dont wont to end up returning it.or buy it if i dont need it
3.i have tools and a hammer i can fix any thing just point me in the right dirction!

There should be a switch at the clutch lever to pedal sensing that clutch is depressed or the trigger wire to starter would be disabled. Check that for even continuity when clutch is depressed. It may be adjustable or a wire fell out?? Could plain be bad but bet is that's the issue,

ya tom i knew about the clutch postion swith. i played with it ,heck i even went out and bought a new one and replaced it anyway(what a pain btw) i'm thiking more about it i think it lies more with a short or igntion switch.but thanks any way i just need more ideas trying to get someone to come up with something i didnt think of.

Does power make it to that switch? If not go back to check ign switch. You tell me - is this one of those cars that needs to be in reverse (or neutral?) or starter wont trigger either?

good point i'll check power to switch , asap and no i dont think it has to be in nutral, just clutch in but just to be carful i alway start it in nutral

TMK any of these switches get the signal/power but just don't allow it on to trigger starter as a safety feature. The power should be sent by your ignition request but can be cut off as you know if clutch is not depressed or more.
Automatics don't start unless in P or N - same idea. More than one car has gone smashing thru a wall because of just reaching in the window to start it with failed or NO such devices.
A not so funny story: True BTW - high end Fords and others have automatic parking brake releases when shifted OUT of park. Handy feature, BUT for a decade many Ford products didn't stay securely in Park! Now try starting car to let warm up so you can de-ice it, clear off snow and watch it fall into reverse and fly away from you! Really happened a LOT way back and I owned many of those. Was lucky and nothing happened as I could feel the lack of those being securely in park.
Imagine (there's a car in this pic) starting this car to drive away while stone cold - NOT. You have no choice but to warm it up to clear it off so it's running and you aren't in it of course! In that pic of course the car isn't going anywhere because of the snow even in gear would just spin wheels but it's not funny!
Seriously - that's one of my cars. Think you'll get to work on time?
