Hi I have a ford1992 f150 with a 5L That I put in new (rebuild long block) 6000 kL ago. I have a problem with it sputtering at start up and sometimes I need to hold down the gas to keep it going for the first min or so .It also only gets about 9 maybe10 miles to the gal (200 k to 50L of fuel) I Had it scanned with a Snapon modis and turned up no codes. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great . Thanks

The 5L could be either a six or an eight. The six was known for head bolt problems and intake manifold problems but was otherwise ok. The V8 has been very dependable in my experience.

You can check integrity at intake manifold using carb cleaner at gaskets and no change in idle should be noted.

Back to head bolts on the six. They should not be reused and simple torque won't work. You said "long" block which should have had the head(s) with it. If the six think about those bolts, T

You may want to start with a fuel pressure test to eliminate a fuel supply problem. If that checks out O.K. you should make sure the new engine is a direct fit engine for that year, make, and model. If it isn't, you may have sensor and computer issues as to the engine design may be throwing the information sensors a curve.

Hay Thanks for the help. It is an 8cyl I did try the carb cleaner at intake with no change but might have to give it a second go. Thanks again and if you think of anything else please let me know. Presto

Hi. Thanks for the help. I did a pressure test and it was 40-45 PSI .Would it make a difference with the computer and sensors even if I used all the original ones the intake and everything from that up is original to. Thanks for the help , this thing is starting to get to me (just can't get it working right) Presto

If you have access to a scan tool you can do a KOEO and a KOER test. If those turn up clean you can run a cylinder balance test also. You can try the wiggle test to make sure nothing is unplugged or there are no bad connections or broken wires. A scan tool would be beneficial to you right now because Ford offers a wide variety of tests. One thing does come to mind. Check to make sure that when #1 cylinder is on top dead center compression stroke that the rotor in the distributor is pointing at the #1 terminal on the cap. It should be right on it when the crank shaft is at 0 degrees. If it isn't then you may have to tweak the distributor or if it's way off, pull the distributor and install correctly. Then you would need a scan tool to do the timing test so you can time the engine to factory specs. Check that out and maybe replace the pickup and module as they aren't that expensive to replace but can wreak havoc on performance if they start going bad.

Re: sputter & bad milage Sign In

I am not sure if the Snap On can do the tests. I have been using OTC for the past 15 years and mine has all of the self test capabilities. If you can get your hands on a scan tool try to get an OTC Monitor 4000 Enhanced. There isn't much that can't do.

The pickup is inside the distributor underneath the rotor and reluctor wheel. The module is mounted on the side of the distributor.
