Hi i wounder if some kind person would give me some advice please. i am planing on buying a van but it has been wrote it off as a cat d in his advert he has said this last owner was going under a bridge which had about a foot of flood water under it and a HGV meet him doing about 50 mph and a tidal wave flooded the engine and caused one of the con rods to bend which caused it to misfire on one cylinder so the insurance paid him £3000 and wrote it off as a cat d i then bought it and fitted a new piston and con rod one valve and a cup or cam follower and also timming belt and aux belt and fully serviced it brakes etc. I dont know any thing about engine's the question is should i buy or not ? many thanks to who ever replays Tom

Have you looked at the van? You should take the van to your mechanic before you buy it and have it completely checked out. That way you kind of know what your getting into. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

It's pretty rare to be able to repair one after getting hydro-locked at high RPM. The bent rod usually damages the cylinder way and I bet he just ignored that. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I would never buy anything that was hydro-locked unless it was at a price that allowed for a new engine. I would never trust someone else's patch job.

To answer the subject line questions - NO - don't buy troubles like that unless you want parts off of it. It's been "written off" for a reason. There could be no end to troubles even with new engine IMO, T

This got into water deep enough to wreck the motor. You don't know for sure if this guy's story is true or not. I'd be it got flooded where it sat with the blown motor. Don't touch it with a ten foot pole. It will be a money pit. Obviously this guy isn't doing his repairs properly. Nobody gets a wrecked engine and just replaces one cylinder's worth of parts. You rebuild the whole motor. This thing would be too expensive to own even if he gave it to you for free.
