i have a 97 chevy blazer for quite a while the motor has been making a screeching noise that seems to be comming from the top of motor. sounds like the serpentine belt slipping so i put belt dressing on it. no good then the sevice engine light comes on entermitantly. yesterday for the first time it stated losing power when i acelerate and on hills it backfires. could this be the alternator?

Is the belt tight? Tensioners can fail, pulleys can be trouble, alternator a possibility but not so fast on that. Belt could be at the extreme of the tensioner's ability to self adjust so check belt tension first. If loose it could cause all that you've noted, T
