s10 pickup possible timing chain?

Hey all, Question on a Chevy S10 pickup, 1998, 2.2 l, 320k miles. Not the original engine. It started making noise, then the dashboard lit up and I shut it down while I was driving... Not sure if it died or I shut it down first. Anyway, I had a friend over who told me it was likely the timing chain jumping off, and said I would need a new engine... If it is the timing chain, will I definitely need a new engine or is it possible that it didn't cause any additional damage? I have not cracked it open to inspect because I'm not really experienced enough... Any advice/info appreciated. Thanks!

It's possible it didn't cause any additional damage. What kind of troubleshooting did your friend do to narrow it down to the timing chain?

Not a ton. Opened the hood, looked around, tried starting it. He went mostly off of what I told him happened, plus that the car cranks but doesn't start but has power, and its not leaking anything, didn't overheat, no other obvious problems. Tow truck driver said the same thing. I was actually wondering myself if that was really the problem... Other thoughts? Thanks.

You need to take a compression test before drawing ay conclusions. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Hey all, Just got a chance to post now, but as I was pulling the spark plugs to do the compression test, the threads that the spark plug screw into came out of one of the cylinders. I was able to tap it and put new threads in, and the lock tight is currently curing. I dry tested 2 cylinders before this happened, both were between 75-80 psi dry. Will follow up after I finish testing. Thanks for all the help so far, I'll let you know asap what happens! Andy

Crap... how serious potentially? is it even worth completing the test, and will doing so give me more information? Thanks for the info though, I concentrated on my other (also broken-down and also troubleshooting on this wonderful resource of a site) based on that assessment... Any additional info is appreciated, and if you think it will help I can complete the test tomorrow. Thanks again. Andy

You have an engine with 320K miles and no compression in at least 2 cylinders. It's time to bury it.
