89 jeep cherokee

150,000

i was able to remove old pulley. when i went to put new one on i saw a bag that said woodruff key.
i am not sure where this goes. the new pulley has a slot and i noticed the shaft has a male
groove which should match up.
do i need this and if so where does it go? thanks for the help

Yes, you absolutely need it in there. The slot in the crankshaft is where it goes. The harmonic balancer will have a matching groove. If the old woodruff key is still in the crankshaft, grab it with a pair of vise grips or carefully knock it out with a hammer and screwdriver. But, be careful not to let it drop inside. Do it carefully. Maybe, even have a magnet touching it as you carefully remove it. Then, just replace it with the new one. Again, carefully tap the new one into the slot on the crankshaft. Make sure it's centered and fully seated before trying to install the new balancer.
